A US company without a US account is only half set up
Traditional US banks usually ask you to walk into a branch with an SSN — which shuts out most non-resident founders. The realistic route for a foreign-owned LLC or C-Corp is a modern online platform that accepts applications from international founders. The two names you will hear most are Mercury and Wise Business.
Mercury is a financial technology company, not a bank. It provides business banking services through its FDIC-insured partner banks, Choice Financial Group and Column N.A., Members FDIC — deposits are held with those partner banks. Wise is an international money transfer and multi-currency payment service, not a bank; its Business account gives you US routing and account details so clients can pay you in USD like a local.
Both accept online applications from foreign owners using a passport and an EIN — no SSN and no US trip needed just to apply. But both also review every application carefully, and vague answers, mismatched documents or an unclear business model lead to refusals. That review is exactly where our guidance helps: we prepare your documents and answers before you submit, so your application reads the way a compliance reviewer expects.
Please read this first: Extreme Filer is not a bank, and we do not open accounts ourselves or decide approvals. We provide application guidance only. Mercury, Wise and every other provider review applications independently, and approval is subject to the provider's own review — it is never guaranteed.
Application guidance, done before you press submit
We cannot submit applications in your name — and no honest service can. What we do is make sure everything the provider sees is complete, consistent and clearly explained.
Document preparation
We collect and check your formation documents, EIN letter, passport and operating agreement so names, dates and addresses match everywhere.
Application answers reviewed
We go through every application question with you in advance — business activity, expected volumes, source of funds — so nothing is left vague.
A business description that makes sense
Reviewers approve what they understand. We help you describe what you sell, who pays you and why you need a US account in clear, specific language.
Rejection fixes
Already refused? We review what was submitted, identify the likely problem — documents, description, activity type — and fix it before you try again or choose another provider.
Stripe & PayPal linking help
Once the account is active, we guide you through adding its routing and account numbers as your Stripe and PayPal payout account, with name-matching checks.
The right platform for your case
Mercury, Wise Business, or both — we explain the honest differences for your business type, country and expected payment pattern before you apply.
Documents and details providers normally ask for
Exact requirements vary by provider and business type — this is the standard set for a foreign-owned US company. We verify each item with you before you apply.
| Document / Detail | What it is and why it matters |
|---|---|
| Articles of Organization / Incorporation | The state-approved formation document proving your LLC or C-Corp legally exists. |
| EIN confirmation letter (CP 575) | Your IRS EIN letter. The company name on it must match your formation documents exactly. |
| Valid passport | For every owner/director. This is your identity document in place of an SSN. |
| Operating agreement / bylaws | Shows who owns and manages the company — providers use it to confirm the applicant's authority. |
| US business address | Your registered agent / business address in the formation state. A personal foreign address alone is usually not enough for the business address field. |
| Website or store link | Proof of real business activity — a live website, Amazon/Shopify store, or portfolio. If you have none yet, we help you present your planned activity honestly. |
| Business description & expected activity | What you sell, who your customers are, expected monthly volume and where payments come from. |
Don't have your EIN or operating agreement yet? We can arrange those first — see our EIN for Non-Residents and US LLC Formation services.
From first message to a submitted application in four steps
Tell us about your business
Message us on WhatsApp with your company details — what you sell, where your customers are, and which platform you want to try.
We prepare your documents
We check your Articles, EIN letter, passport and operating agreement, and fix any name or address mismatches before they cause a refusal.
You apply — with reviewed answers
You submit the Mercury or Wise Business application yourself, using the business description and answers we prepared together.
Verify, then connect payments
If the provider asks follow-up questions, we help you respond. Once active, we guide you through linking Stripe and PayPal payouts.
Why accounts for foreign owners get rejected — and the fix
Providers rarely explain a refusal in detail. These are the patterns we see most often in applications from non-resident founders.
Vague business description
"Consulting" or "e-commerce" alone tells a reviewer nothing.
Fix: Describe the exact service or products, your customers, and how money flows — in two or three specific sentences.
Mismatched names or documents
The company name on the EIN letter, Articles and application must be identical — one different spelling can stall or sink a review.
Fix: We cross-check every document before submission and correct mismatches at the source.
No proof of business activity
No website, no store, no portfolio — the reviewer cannot confirm a real business exists.
Fix: Provide a live link or honest evidence of activity. If you're pre-launch, say so clearly instead of leaving it blank.
Unsupported business activity
Some industries (for example certain money services, gambling or crypto activities) fall outside a provider's supported list.
Fix: We check your activity against the provider's rules first, and point you to the realistic option instead of a doomed application.
Wrong address expectations
Using a random US address, or only a foreign home address where a US business address is required, triggers verification failures.
Fix: Use your registered agent / business address for the company, and your real home address for yourself — exactly as the form asks.
Applying before the EIN arrives
A business account application needs a real EIN — submitting with incomplete company details invites a refusal.
Fix: Finish formation and EIN first. Our EIN service handles this for foreign owners without an SSN.
Questions foreign founders ask about US business accounts
Can a non-resident open a US business bank account without an SSN?
In many cases, yes. Fintech platforms such as Mercury accept applications from foreign-owned US companies using your passport and your company's EIN instead of an SSN. Approval is never guaranteed — the provider reviews every application and makes the final decision.
Is Mercury a bank?
No. Mercury is a financial technology company, not a bank. It provides business banking services through its FDIC-insured partner banks, Choice Financial Group and Column N.A., Members FDIC, and deposits are held with those partner banks.
Is Wise a bank?
No. Wise is an international money transfer and multi-currency payment service, not a bank. A Wise Business account gives you US account details (routing and account number) to receive USD payments, which is why many non-resident founders use it alongside — or instead of — a traditional account.
What documents do I need before I apply?
You will normally need your filed Articles of Organization (or Incorporation), your EIN confirmation letter (CP 575), a valid passport for each owner, an operating agreement, a US business address via your registered agent, and proof of business activity such as a website or store link. We check every document before you submit.
Can you guarantee my account will be approved?
No — and you should be careful with anyone who does. Extreme Filer is not a bank and does not decide approvals. Mercury, Wise and every other provider review applications themselves. What we do is prepare your documents and answers properly, which removes the most common avoidable reasons for rejection.
Can I link the account to Stripe and PayPal?
Yes. Once your account is active, its US routing and account numbers can be added as the payout account in Stripe and PayPal. We guide you through the linking steps and the name-matching checks that prevent payout holds.
Get your US business account application right the first time
Tell us about your company on WhatsApp — we'll tell you honestly which platform fits, what you're missing, and your exact price before you pay anything.
Extreme Filer is not a bank. Mercury and Wise are independent providers; account approval is subject to each provider's own review and is not guaranteed.
