Sales Tax Permit Reactivation — All 50 States

Your Sales Tax Permit Went Inactive? We Get It Active Again

In Texas and in every other state, a reseller certificate only works while the sales tax permit behind it is active. When the state makes your permit inactive — most often over unfiled returns — you lose tax-free buying and the legal right to collect sales tax. Extreme Filer first finds the exact reason, files what is missing, requests a penalty waiver — and in 99% of cases your same permit becomes active again automatically.

Signs your permit is already inactive

Many sellers only find out when a supplier or marketplace rejects them. If any of these have happened, your permit needs attention now.

A supplier refused your resale certificate

Wholesalers and brands verify permit numbers. An inactive permit fails verification, so tax-free purchasing is refused and brand approvals stall.

A marketplace flagged your account

Amazon, Walmart and eBay check seller permits. A closed permit can mean listing blocks, tax-collection problems or a suspended seller account.

The state sent a closure or penalty notice

Letters about unfiled returns, a required bond, or a permit being closed/revoked mean the clock is already running on penalties and interest.

Your permit lookup shows “inactive” or “closed”

On the Texas Comptroller permit search — and equivalent lookups in other states — your company shows inactive even though the company itself is still active.

You stopped filing because you had no sales

Zero sales does not mean zero filing. Most states still require a zero return — skip it, and the state assumes you stopped reporting and closes the permit.

Your company is active, but the permit is not

This is the most common pattern we see: the LLC is in good standing, yet the sales tax permit was closed separately by the tax authority.

Why sales tax permits become inactive — in every state

States use different words — inactive, closed, revoked, suspended, cancelled — but the causes are almost always one of these six. We resolve all six.

1. The bond issue

One wrong step in how the permit was set up can make the state require a surety bond before the permit can be issued or stay active — in Texas this is commonly a $500 bond. We check whether a waiver is available for you, and file the waiver or guide the bond posting.

2. The address issue

Some addresses on file are not acceptable to the tax authority — a virtual address, a mismatched registered-agent address, or mail returned as undeliverable. Permits get shut down over it. Note: this is the one case where the old permit usually does not come back — if a new address has to be added, the old permit stays inactive and a new permit is issued for the new address.

3. Unfiled sales tax returns

The most common cause. When returns are not filed — even zero returns — penalties pile up and the permit goes inactive. We file the missing returns for every open period, file a penalty waiver request, and once the waiver is accepted the permit reactivates automatically.

4. Missed renewal or report

Some states renew permits or require periodic confirmation. Miss the deadline and the permit lapses automatically, even if you did everything else right.

5. Company fell out of good standing

If the underlying company was forfeited or dissolved at state level (for example over franchise tax), the sales tax permit tied to it is closed as well. The company must be fixed first — we coordinate both.

6. Information mismatch

A name, EIN or ownership change that was never updated with the tax authority can trigger closure when records stop matching. We amend the records and restore the permit.

Important: reactivating without fixing the cause does not work. States check the underlying problem first — that is why we always ask for the reason first, fix that exact reason, and only then does the permit come back.

How we actually fix it — from real cases we have handled

This is the exact process we follow on inactive permit cases, step by step. No guesswork — the state record itself tells us what went wrong.

1

We ask: why did it go inactive?

First, we check the state record and ask the key question — what is the reason this permit became inactive? Every fix starts here, because the reason decides the whole route.

2

If filings were missed, we file them

In most cases the reason is unfiled sales tax returns. We prepare and file every missing return for every open period — including zero returns where there were no sales.

3

We request a penalty waiver

Late filings create penalties. After the returns are filed, we submit a penalty waiver request to the state on your behalf, with the case explained properly.

4

Waiver accepted → permit active automatically

Once the penalty waiver request is accepted, the permit becomes active again automatically — same permit, same number. This is what happens in 99% of cases we handle.

5

The one exception: a new address

If a new address has to be added, the situation is different: the old permit stays inactive and a new permit is activated with the new address. Outside this case, a new permit is not needed — the old one reactivates.

Bottom line: 99% of the time your old permit reactivates itself once the cause is fixed and the penalty waiver is accepted. You do not lose your permit number, your history, or your supplier setup.

What an inactive permit costs your business

Until the permit is active again, core parts of your business are legally and practically blocked.

You cannot buy inventory tax-free

Your reseller certificate is only valid under an active permit. Without it, suppliers must charge you sales tax on stock you are buying purely for resale — cutting straight into your margin.

You cannot legally collect sales tax

Collecting tax from customers without an active permit — or selling taxable goods without collecting — both create liability. The state can assess the tax out of your own pocket, plus penalties.

Marketplaces and brands can suspend you

Permit verification is routine for Amazon, Walmart, wholesale brands and distributors. A failed check can freeze approvals and accounts with no warning.

Penalties keep growing

Every unfiled period behind the closure continues to attract penalties and interest until the returns are filed and the account is cleaned up.

Same permit back, or a new permit? The honest answer

In 99% of cases, your same permit reactivates — no new permit, no new number. A new permit is only needed in one situation: when the address has to change.

SituationHow it is usually resolvedWhat we do
Inactive over unfiled returns (most common)File the missing returns + penalty waiver request. Once the waiver is accepted, the same permit becomes active automatically.Identify every missing period, file the back returns, submit the penalty waiver request, and confirm your permit shows active again.
Inactive over bond or record issueThe same permit reactivates once the bond / waiver or record correction is cleared with the state.Check waiver eligibility or guide the bond posting, correct the records, and confirm reactivation.
New address has to be added — the exceptionThe old permit stays inactive and a new permit is issued for the new address.File the new permit application for the new address and help you update suppliers and marketplaces with the new details.
Company itself forfeited / dissolvedThe company must be reinstated first; only then can the permit tied to it come back.Coordinate the company reinstatement and the permit fix together, in the right order.

How permit reactivation works — 5 steps

1

Free check on WhatsApp

Send your company name, state and permit number if you have it. We check the state record and ask the first question: why did this permit go inactive?

2

We map the cleanup

You get a clear list: which returns are missing, what penalties are showing, whether a bond is involved, and any address or record fixes needed — with the full quote.

3

We file the missing returns

All outstanding sales tax returns are prepared and filed with the state tax authority — including zero returns for periods with no sales.

4

We request the penalty waiver

We submit the penalty waiver request. Once the state accepts it, your same permit reactivates automatically — this is the outcome in 99% of cases. Only if a new address must be added do we file for a new permit instead.

5

You trade again, protected

Use your reseller certificate tax-free again, collect sales tax legally, and follow the filing calendar we give you so it stays active.

Reseller certificate vs sales tax permit — why one kills the other

A common confusion, and the heart of this problem:

Sales tax permit (seller’s permit)

The state licence itself. It gives your business the right to collect sales tax from customers and the standing to issue resale certificates. This is the record the state marks active, inactive, closed or revoked.

Reseller / resale certificate

The certificate you hand to a supplier to buy goods for resale without paying sales tax. It is only honoured while the permit behind it is active — which is why an “inactive reseller certificate” almost always means an inactive sales tax permit underneath.

So if a supplier tells you your reseller certificate is inactive, the fix is at permit level — and that is exactly this service. If you never had a permit at all, see our Sales Tax Registration & Reseller Certificate service instead.

Sales tax permit reactivation — frequently asked questions

Why did my sales tax permit become inactive?

The most common reasons in every state are: sales tax returns were not filed (including zero returns), a surety bond was required and not posted, the address on file was not acceptable to the state, a renewal or report was missed, or the company itself fell out of good standing. We check your state record and tell you the exact reason before you pay anything.

Can an inactive Texas sales tax permit be reactivated, or do I need a new one?

In 99% of cases the same permit reactivates — you do not need a new one. Once we find the reason it went inactive, file any missing returns and get the penalty waiver request accepted, the permit becomes active again automatically. The only common exception is an address change: if a new address has to be added, the old permit stays inactive and a new permit is issued for the new address.

Is a reseller certificate the same as a sales tax permit?

They are linked. Your sales tax (seller’s) permit is the state licence that lets you collect sales tax and issue a resale certificate. When the permit goes inactive, your reseller certificate stops working too — suppliers can refuse tax-free purchases and marketplaces can suspend selling when they verify your permit number.

What happens if I keep selling with an inactive permit?

You cannot legally collect sales tax on taxable sales, you cannot buy inventory tax-free with a resale certificate, and Amazon, Walmart, eBay and suppliers can refuse or suspend your account when your permit fails verification. Unfiled periods can also keep building penalties and interest.

What is the $500 surety bond issue in Texas?

In some Texas cases the Comptroller requires a surety bond — commonly $500 — before a permit can be issued or stay active, often because of how the original application was set up. Where a waiver is available, we check your eligibility and prepare and file the waiver request; where a bond is genuinely required, we guide you through posting it correctly.

My permit went inactive because returns were not filed. Can you fix that?

Yes — this is the most common case we handle. We identify every missing filing period, prepare and file the outstanding sales tax returns, and file a penalty waiver request for you. Once the waiver is accepted, the permit reactivates automatically in most cases. We can also file your returns going forward so it does not happen again.

Will my same permit number come back, or will I get a new permit?

In 99% of cases your same permit and same number come back active — no new application is needed. A new permit is only needed when a new address has to be added: in that situation the old permit remains inactive and the state issues a new permit for the new address.

What is a penalty waiver request?

When a permit goes inactive over unfiled returns, penalties are charged for the late periods. After we file the missing returns, we submit a penalty waiver request to the state explaining the case. When the state accepts the waiver, the penalties are removed or reduced and the permit returns to active status.

Do you reactivate permits in states other than Texas?

Yes — in all 50 states. In most cases the same permit number reactivates once the cause is fixed and the penalty waiver is accepted. A fresh permit is mainly needed when the address has to change. We tell you which route your case needs before you pay anything.

How long does permit reactivation take?

It depends on what caused the closure. A simple address or bond issue can be resolved quickly once filed, while permits closed for multiple unfiled returns take longer because the back returns must be prepared first. Before you pay, we give you an honest timeline for your state and your case.
